Premise: An interdisciplinary course in ceramic glazes as art/chemistry…
Science motivations
- Sitting on a panel on structural ceramics
- Thinking about the develop of new glazes as a thermodynamic prediction problem…essentially predicting different oxide producs given precursors.
Reading List
- Ceramic Science for the Potter … out of print…
- Bloomfeld Science for Potters…might be a reasonable substitute
- Eppler, Understanding Glazes … looks like a solid materials chemistry textbook
Similar courses
- Online course on Understanding Glazes
Fordham stuff
- Would make an interesting interdisciplinary capstone course, but nobody in the visual arts program appears to do ceramics…maybe a collaboration with Lehman College
Parerga and Paralipomena
- Building a database to store your glaze outcomes — interesting point on this was the comment about “interaction of glazes”, which sound like a predictable reaction question
- Get a ceramic extrusion 3d printer and make some cool things
- Ultrasonically mix 0.5% graphene oxide into kaolin to make it 3x stronger (ACS Omega 2024)
