I love to make a good Feuerzangenbowle for my annual holiday party, but in the USA, zuckerhutte are expensive. Fortunately, it is easy to make your own (1 tsp water + 1 cup of sugar…pack into a conical glass). But cone shapes are boring. If you are going to make your own, why not come up with other designs? Ideas for hipster zuckerhut designs…

Fabrication methods

  • Casting is probably the best way. Make a silicone mold and go to town
    • youtube tutorial on sugar casting
    • likely have to be a multipart mold for these complicated shapes.
  • 3d printing …essentially do powder-bed fusion, but with sugar instead of metal (and the heat source is more modest)
    • Currant3D sells a professionally rated food 3d printer… They also do production on demand. Corporate parent is SugarLab. They’re based in LA.
    • Open question: Will these types of printed sugar structures maintain their structural integrity upon being doused with high-proof rum? Maybe we need to experiment
    • Candyfab old-school DIY project, just for fun to look at, not really production rated.

Created over dinner with Crayonfou. No Generative AI tools were harmed in the making of this list. But then I couldn’t resist generating a few Dall-E-3 renderings
