Famous scientists with poor intro chemistry grades

To encourage the youth: A list of famous scientists who are “on the record” about receiving poor grades in general chemistry or organic chemistry…*

• Moungi Bawendi (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2023) flunked his first general chemistry exam
• Tomas Lindahl (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2015) failed high school chemistry
• Harold Varmus (Nobel Prize in Medicine, 1989) got a C in organic chemistry (p. 14)
• Alec Wodtke professor at UC Santa Barbara and Göttingen, and Max Planck Institute Director got a C+ on his first gen chem midterm

And physics too…

• Ivar Giaever, Nobel Prize in Physics 1973, got D’s in his university physics and math courses…famously misunderstood when he interviewed for a job.
